Reconstruction of Yorkshire mosaics (British Museum)

This project seeks to re-create the mosaics found at the Cistercian Abbeys in Yorkshire. Many of the originals have been moved to new locations and are badly worn from the effects of winter weather and long term foot-fall. The image below is from part of a panel at Bylands Abbey.

Mosaic tile pattern in situ at Bylands Abbey ruins, Yorkshire

I am starting to work out how to recreate some of the mosaics at Rievaulx and Bylands Abbey and am working on two patterns.

Simple ‘woven’ pattern.

There are only two shapes in this mosaic and they can both be made by cutting down one of my standard tiles if I do not press a pattern it to it.

More complex pattern of circles.

This is a more complex design with four different elements.
